International School Photography Conference – South Africa 2025 Wrap-Up

International School Photography Conference South Africa

What an unforgettable journey!

From small, passionate owner-operators to major enterprise-level companies, this year's International School Photography Conference brought together a dynamic mix of people, all united by a shared love for our craft. Held in both Johannesburg at the FUJIFILM South Africa headquarters and Cape Town at the incredible Orms | Everything Photographic, this event exceeded every expectation.

We were incredibly fortunate to host a diverse lineup of world-class speakers who traveled from across the globe—Australia, the UK, Norway, the United States, Spain, and Chile—to share their knowledge and lift the school photography industry to new heights here in South Africa.

As a presenter myself, I felt genuinely honoured to stand alongside such a talented group of individuals. The energy in the room was electric. Conversations flowed effortlessly. There were moments of reflection, laughter, and plenty of lightbulb moments as attendees recognised that their challenges weren’t unique—but shared across borders and business sizes alike.

A heartfelt thank you must go to Gareth Gilmour for orchestrating this incredible event with such heart and precision. And of course, to the amazing speakers who gave so generously of their time and insight:Harri Olkinuora, Andy Molloy, James Garrett, Leigh Woolford, Marcelo Alvarado, Jeff Brown, Elliott Tyson, Brendon Collopy, and—yes—myself, Glen Nelson.

From sales strategies with Harri, to operational efficiencies with Andy, AI applications with James, and data-driven workflows from my own corner, every session was packed with real-world takeaways. Leigh inspired us to work on our businesses, Marcelo showed us how to grow through innovation, Jeff brought a masterclass in brand storytelling, and Strawbridge Studios’ legends Elliott and Brendon shared insights from the largest and oldest school photography business in America.

But perhaps the most powerful takeaway from Johannesburg was the spirit of collaboration. In a room filled with competing South African photography businesses, there was no competition—just open hearts, open minds, and the kind of camaraderie that shows this industry is truly special. People laughed, listened, learned, and leaned into the possibilities.

As our team made its way to Cape Town to continue the journey, we felt energised. The enthusiasm from delegates there matched the north—and then some! It’s clear there’s a hunger in this market, and the potential for growth and excellence is enormous.

Personally, I walked away uplifted, inspired, and incredibly grateful. I had fascinating conversations—especially with Elliott and Brendon from Strawbridge Studios—and created lasting memories and relationships that I’ll carry forward for years to come.

This conference was more than just an event. It was a milestone. A celebration of where we are, and a bold step toward where we’re going.

South Africa—you’ve been incredible. And this is just the beginning.

Until next time, Glen Nelson
